Gua Sha stroke direction diagram
Gua Sha tutorial

Five steps, head to toe.

Hold the stone at a 15° angle to the skin. Always glide in one direction — never back and forth. Light to medium pressure, slow rhythm.

  1. 01

    Warm up with oil

Apply 3–5 drops of body oil to the area until the skin feels slick. This prevents pulling and lets the stone glide smoothly.

  2. 02

    Neck & shoulders — downward

From the base of the skull, glide down along the trapezius to the shoulder tip. 8 strokes each side. Stop if it feels sharp.

  3. 03

    Outer arm to hand

From shoulder, glide down the outer arm to the wrist in one motion. Finish with 3 light sweeps across the back of the hand. 5 passes per arm.

  4. 04

    Back & waist

Glide either side of the spine, top to waist — never directly on the spinal bone. 6 long strokes per side to warm the back.

  5. 05

    Thigh, calf & foot

Downward strokes from thigh to calf, following the muscle line. Finish with short sweeps on the sole of the foot. 5 passes per leg.

Total session 5–8 minutes. Light redness (sha) is normal and fades within 2–5 days. Drink warm water after. Wait 3–5 days between sessions on the same area.

Cupping points

Where to place the cup.

Suggested acupoints for the floating negative-pressure cup. Hold each point 30–60 seconds, low suction, never on broken skin.

Reading the marks

What the cup tells you.

After cupping, the colour and texture left on the skin offer a quiet reading of circulation, dampness, and internal warmth.

Cupping mark colour chart
  • Pale pink

Normal. Qi and blood flow well.

  • Bright red

Deficiency of qi & yin, or excess internal heat.

  • Dark red

High blood lipids with heat in the body.

  • Grey-white, cool to touch

    Cold deficiency or dampness.

  • Deep purple-black

Poor circulation, blood stasis, irregular cycles.

  • Purple with patches / blisters

Heavy internal dampness; blisters signal damp-heat toxin.

Contraindications

Who should not cup.

Cupping is gentle, but not for every body or every moment. Skip a session if any of these apply.

Heart conditions or broken / wounded skin.

Immune & skin disorders — lupus, severe dermatitis, low platelets.

Frail constitution, pregnancy, menstruation, or intoxication.

Immediately after a heavy meal or on an empty stomach.

Chronic lung conditions — COPD, TB, bronchiectasis, lung abscess.

Over varicose veins, large moles, or inflamed areas.
